Secure Financial Management (SFM) is an SEC Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), a San Antonio, Texas-based financial planning and investment advisory firm that helps individuals and families plan for retirement, manage investments, and make informed financial decisions with confidence. As an RIA, SFM is held to a fiduciary standard, meaning we are legally obligated to act in our clients’ best interests at all times.
Secure Financial Management was founded in 2011 by Jay Kirkwood, CFP®, after he left USAA to build an independent firm focused on personalized, fiduciary-first financial planning. Since then, the firm has helped hundreds of clients navigate retirement planning, investment management, tax-efficient strategies, and major life transitions.
Yes, as an SEC Registered Investment Advisor, we are held to a fiduciary standard, which means we are legally and ethically required to always act in our clients’ best interests. Our recommendations are based on your goals, needs, and circumstances — not on commissions, quotas, or proprietary products. We believe this is how long-term, successful relationships are built.
What sets Secure Financial Management apart is that, as clients approach retirement and move through it, their financial decisions often become more complex. It is no longer just about investments and income. Tax planning and estate planning become increasingly important, and the choices made in one area can have a significant impact on the others.
That is where we stand apart. In addition to retirement planning and investment management, we also offer tax planning and estate planning services, allowing clients to address these important areas in a more coordinated and effective way. Our goal is to help clients make smarter decisions across the full picture of their financial lives.
Yes. We regularly help clients evaluate and coordinate existing retirement accounts, including 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage accounts, pensions, and other assets, to ensure they align with their overall retirement plan.
No. Although Secure Financial Management is headquartered in San Antonio, we serve clients throughout Texas and across the United States. Whether you prefer in-person meetings or a more convenient virtual relationship, we are equipped to provide a high level of personal service wherever you are located.
Secure Financial Management does not custody client funds. No check is ever written to an advisor or to our business. Client assets always remain in the client’s own name, and clients maintain ownership and control of their accounts and funds at all times. Accounts are held with our custodian, Charles Schwab. This structure creates transparency and adds an important layer of protection by ensuring client assets remain in the client’s own name rather than with our firm or any individual advisor. It also reflects one of the most important safeguards in the financial industry: client assets should be held in the client’s own name with an established third-party custodian.
